Ahhh, I can't believe you were born the year I graduated high school. Geez, I feel old. I have been peaking in for a while, then went 'cold turkey' and stopped reading blogs. But since I found my Pamajama back today, decided to roam a bit. Found this lovely piece of work that gives me hope in you young people! LOL! Were you an only child? Such a diverse amount of material you studied growing up? Or maybe more accurately, 'slurped up.'

Well, I do want to tell you that I went back to finish the last two years of my undergraduate degree at 43. I finished Dec. 2006. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but I had such a delicious time, especially in my Sociology classes, five of them. My degree has absolutely nothing to do with what I do for a living, but I enjoy that also.

I think you should do whatever brings you joy, and not worry about what anyone else in the world thinks about it. I am pretty sure, just from my short meanderings in your blog, that IF you write it, they WILL buy it! LOL! Pretty sure, indeed.

I wasted A LOT of time getting a Masters in Social Work that I quickly abandoned once I actually worked in the field. It's funny how we fall into our career fields. I eventually followed my love for bank reconciliations into accounting.

You may be self conscious about your writing, but you HAVE TO know how good you are. Just let your mommy read your stuff. She'll tell you. That is so cool that your mother is an accomplished author. What an interesting household you must have experienced.

Well written. I am assuming you have read the Gulag Archipelago, but if not, it's a serious must.

I have almost no memories from my childhood, but one of the only ones that survives is my father waking me up one night when I was eight years old and telling me to come into my parents' bedroom to watch something. I went in there, and Tom Brokaw was standing in the cold, telling us that this was a great day. And I watched the wall fall.

I am amused by your SAT score. My math and verbal were equally dissimilar.

The first novel I wrote, in sixth grade, was a blatant copy of an obscure little book called The Seventh Princess. I refuse to open it, because I hate being embarassed by my own past.

You are fortunate to have your mother's example. My mom is an English professor, who writes scary, expert books that are only understood by 2% of the population. Which is why the only novel I've yet completed is a cheesy, tawdry V.C. Andrews knockoff.

Sorry for all the reply. That is all.

I wanted to be Indiana Jones, too but I never wanted to get dirty. That kind of killed the dream for me. So then I just wanted to date Indiana Jones. But as a rule, archeologists are socially disabled. I had to settle for the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland instead.

Seriously DC, you have saved some of my sanity with that post. For years and years I wanted to be an archaeologist but gave it up my sophomore year in college. I have regretted it off and on ever since then, thinking that I would have been so much happier doing that job. I think it's the whole elusive 'grass is greener' thing. Your post reminded me exactly why I gave it up and exactly why I'm perfectly suited for the job I have now. I may not have a PhD but it doesn't make me any less smart. So thanks.

And hey when are you going to post some of your 'real' writing then? Huh?

I would have never once guessed that you had spent a minute less in graduate school than I had, if not more. To hell with lack of letters after your name, I graduated with people far less expressive or intelligent.

And yes, the Boise State fellow did you a huge favor. That's why I decided not to pursue an academic career as well - seeing a few of the professors in graduate school scrabbling for appointments was an eye-opener. It's cold hard fact that in many fields (especially the humanities) we're churning out more PhD's than we have jobs available. Blah.

Clint: "Fire rear-rig missle!"
[Ghostly Obi-Wan-like voice in his head]: "You must THINK in Russian. THINK...in Russian."

Now that's funny. Must be something in the air. I wrote about a similar topic this morning. Good luck in your writing conquests! I think your writing is great, and I bet you have been practicing a lot since you were twelve.
